In this seminar, Dechert's Shane DeBeer and Navpreet Atwal examine the basics of the oil and gas extraction industry from a legal perspective, including exploration and production in the US and several other jurisdictions. The session includes information on upstream issues (the mineral estate, leasing and working interests in the US, and licenses, concessions, risk agreements and Product Sharing Agreements (PSAs) in selected jurisdictions outside the US) as well as SEC regulations that govern booking reserves (claiming oil and gas assets on a company’s balance sheet). Also discussed are issues surrounding fracking, joint venture and joint operating agreements and the basics of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
- Like our Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oilvips - Oil and gas are generated from a source rock, organic matter buried in the depths of the earth. Once formed, they climb back towards the surface. On their way, cap rocks can impede their progress and they accumulate in reservoir rocks. Here they constitute hydrocarbon fields, which can be identified by interpreting seismic data (a sort of echography). The data is obtained with the help of a seismic ship. To confirm the interpretations of seismic data, two types of drilling gear exist. Each is adapted to a range of depth of water (down to more than 2500 meters). The platform seen here is a semi-submersible, which floats and retains its stabilised position by means of anchors fixed on the seabed. Platforms at sea are used not only f...

Oil / Natural Gas Exploitation from Upstream, Midstream to Downstream Upstream: The upstream includes searching for potential underground or underwater crude oil and natural gas fields, drilling exploratory wells, and subsequently drilling and operating the wells that recover and bring the crude oil and/or raw natural gas to the surface. Midstream: Midstream sector may include natural gas/crude oil processing plants that purify the raw natural gas/crude oil as well as removing and producing elemental sulfur and natural gas liquids (NGL) as finished end-products. Downstream The downstream sector commonly refers to the refining of petroleum crude oil and the processing and purifying of raw natural gas, as well as the marketing and distribution of products derived from crude oil and n...
